The MTV Video Music Awards were last night, and though we still don’t fully understand what exactly “Video Music” is, it’s one of the bigger award ceremonies for the music industry. The Moon Man is at least one of the cooler trophies in the game (along with the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards blimp).
So, you’d guess that the attendees, presenters and nominees would receive a pretty solid gift set, right? And you’d be correct.
The event, hosted by Doja Cat (who knows a thing or two about merch) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, involved a bag worth $600 for those lucky enough to be there.
Thanks to some inside info from The Hollywood Reporter, we’re able to highlight some of the most interesting gifts.
• Even though we live in the digital age of the future, vinyl records are wildly popular. So, the portable Crosley turntable is a good gift for musicians and music fans. Vinyl has been included in a few promotions we’ve seen lately, including some that feature a Crosley turntable.
• Speaking of tools for musicians, MTV gave out a Blip Box synthesizer that looks like a toy and might be appealing to kids, but packs some professional punch. It’s no Reese’s Puffs box, but it’ll do in a pinch.
• MTV also included T-shirts that look to raise awareness for MTV’s mental health awareness initiative with an MTV-branded “Mental Health is Health” tee.
• On that apparel front, MTV included Alo hoodies that combine functionality for out on the street or at a party, but construction and comfort that fit just as well in the gym or yoga studio.
• The gift set also included things like a Bananagrams game, kombucha shampoo and a subscription to Alo’s Move fitness program.
It’s a cool assortment, because it seems like things that most of the recipients will actually use. It’s not quite as glitzy as something like the Oscars, which includes lavish vacations and bath bombs made with gold. But, the ultimate goal of promotional gifts is to give recipients something they’ll want to keep. The VMAs seem like they hit the mark there.
