‘Knowing QuickBooks’ Isn’t Enough

Question: I am interviewing a bookkeeper who is familiar with QuickBooks. Is that all I need to know?

Answer: No! Setting aside the issues of the complexity of a bookkeeper’s former experience, which is the subject of another blog, you need to know more about which QuickBooks this person has used in the past.

QuickBooks has created its various products on different platforms. QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Mac are totally different software, and also are different from the desktop products QuickBooks Pro, Premier and Enterprise.

As ad specialty distributors, look for someone with QuickBooks Desktop experience, preferably QuickBooks Premier or Enterprise.

You need to be specific about this, because you could end up with someone who knows nothing at all about your software. The catch phrase of “knowing Quickbooks” is far too vague.

QuickBooks Premier and Enterprise can be modified to better serve ad specialty distributors. Harriet Gatter is a QuickBooks ProAdvisor, a former accounting professor and a former ad specialty distributor. She advises ad specialty distributors to use QuickBooks Premier and Enterprise, often in conjunction with other industry-specific software, to manage the complexities of the ad specialty business, with the results being time saved, errors eliminated and an overall accurate accounting of your business.
