The FDA Says Love Is Not a Real Ingredient

Has a family member or friend ever told you that the secret ingredient in an extra-special recipe is love? Well, the FDA would have a big problem with that.

Nashoba Brook Bakery recently listed “love” as an ingredient in its granola, prompting the FDA to issue a warning to what it took as a serious statement.

The FDA wrote:

Your Nashoba Granola label lists ingredient “Love.” Ingredients required to be declared on the label or labeling of food must be listed by their common or usual name [21 CFR 101.4(a)(1). “Love” is not a common or usual name of an ingredient, and is considered to be intervening material because it is not part of the common or usual name of the ingredient.

Harsh, FDA. Very harsh.

So, for promotional suppliers looking to add a bit of love to their edible promotions, be sure to keep things figurative. We know you add love to all of your promotions, but the FDA won’t like it if you list it as an ingredient.
