12 Fourth-Quarter Promo Product Ideas (and Two Things to Know About This Q4)

Even though summer isn’t technically over until Sept. 22, August tends to be the unofficial end of summer (just like Memorial Day acts as the unofficial start). So, the season is winding down—even if you weren’t able to take your usual summer vacation—and the kids are headed back to school, whether that be virtually or in-person.

With that also comes the end of Q3 and the start of the final quarter of 2020. If you haven’t begun to prep for Q4, don’t worry. As Kevin Bloomquist, director of sales, North America for Spector and Co., Montreal, shared with us, the best time to start thinking and planning for the fourth quarter is right now!

With that in mind, we assembled this quick selling guide of what you should know about Q4. Below, you’ll find some tips and advice on trends and expectations for this year, along with a hand-picked collection of products for Q4’s in-demand categories. We hope it points you in the right direction for some year-end sales.

What Buyers Are Looking For

With the change in demand for certain products, overall, this Q4 will most likely look a lot different compared to last year.

“I believe with all that we have been dealing with, end-buyers will be looking for more thoughtful products, as well as more creativity all around,” Bloomquist said. “It is not all about the product, it is also the added value we bring with creativity and decoration options. They will want items that have more perceived value and function. [This includes] any products that fit into a person’s well-being, work life at home and life balance.”

As for apparel, there is still a place for it, but personal protective equipment (PPE) is going to be a must-have for the back-to-school season. “I think end-buyers will still be looking for promotional products, such as T-shirts and fleece, for back-to-school and end-of-summer activities and holidays,” said Tracy-Ann Kilelee, merchandising and marketing coordinator for Delta Apparel, Duluth, Ga. “Even though times are a bit different this time of year than they were last year.

“Face masks will also be in high demand as students, teachers and staff will need to be equipped with PPE as they roll into a very strange school year and try to make sure everyone is staying safe and protected,” Kilelee continued. “I think the high demand of face masks and PPE products will span more than just schools, as people/families will need more PPE products as their lives get busier from the school year reopening.”

What’s Changed (and What Hasn’t)

A lot has changed for your customers, so be ready to help guide them as always with their promo needs. But approach Q4 knowing that customers will rely on you for more than just products.

“I believe as an industry we should remember that our customers still want the same products they have always wanted from us, as well as the quality, trust and service they have come to expect,” Kilelee said. “We should check in more with our customers and take the additional free time we have to find new leads, or research digital selling tools and services. This way you keep up with the ever-changing socioeconomic climate and avoid becoming irrelevant.”

But keep in mind this is not your typical Q4. Bloomquist, who is looking forward to moving past the struggles of 2020, hopes for a strong quarter that carries into 2021.

“Remember to be respectful of the situation and the stress that we all have been going through,” he said. “This includes vendors, distributors, factories and end-users. We are all in this together and need to work hard to help strengthen our industry.”
