Steve-O has been known for his outrageous stunts for decades on shows like “Jackass” and “Wildboys.” Though he’s calmed down a little bit as age catches up to him, he’s still pushing the limits.
To that point, Liquid Death has been pushing the limits of what a beverage brand can do with its promos, like including Tony Hawk’s blood in a skateboard graphic, selling a branded enema kit with Travis Barker, or letting a guy who broke more than 50 bones design a T-shirt.
The two have teamed up now for a “real” voodoo doll made from Steve-O’s hair.
In what’s billed as Steve-O’s first “supernatural stunt,” the doll features Steve-O’s real hair and was “activated” by a “real” voodoo witch doctor.
Obviously, these were a limited batch, as Steve-O only had so much hair to donate (though the hair has been supplemented by ritual salts), and they sold out already.
“Anything you decide to do to the doll, Steve-O will actually feel!” the site said.
Whether that’s true or not, this is a real, physical product that goes way outside of the box of usual beverage promos. Speaking of the box, though, each doll comes in a packaged pink box with a window to display the doll, not unlike a Barbie, with the Liquid Death logo on the sides.
Liquid Death is one of the most fascinating brand stories right now. As it says itself, it’s just water and tea. It’s not reinventing drinking. It’s not even an energy drink or something like that. It’s just water and tea! But the way it has tapped into culture through its branding is what sets it apart, offering a steady supply of merchandise and connecting with people like action sports heroes, comedians, podcasters – really anyone with an audience that tends to skew young – and making its merchandise so interesting.
This is sort of a match made in heaven, too, as Steve-O is no stranger to the print and promo world himself. Remember when he printed a billboard and duct taped himself to it to promote his new comedy special?
