Promotional Cigar Lighters Recalled Due to Lack of Child Safety Measures, Testing

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling about 60,000 cigar lighters that were given out as promotional products due to the lack of child safety mechanisms and insufficient federal child safety testing.

The lighters, manufactured by China-based Wenzhou LingShuo Smoking Accessories Co. Ltd. and imported by Miami Lakes, FL-headquartered Oliva Cigars Co., were given out as branded promo products by wholesalers and retailers in marketing campaigns and in cigar lounges from August 2022 to July 2024.

According to the CPSC, the recalled lighters lack required child-resistant features and were not tested to the federal regulatory requirements for child resistance. “Young children under five years of age could ignite the lighters, posing fire and burn hazards,” the CPSC said, though no injuries or incidents have been reported.

Each lighter measures about 3” x 1”. They come in white, brown and red colors, with brand names printed on the side – Oliva Cigar Nub, Oliva, Serie V and Cain.

The CPSC recommends that recipients of the lighters immediately stop using them and dispose of them. Oliva Cigars is reportedly contacting all wholesalers and businesses who might have given the product to customers. Since the products were provided for free, no refund or replacement will be provided.

Oliva Cigars is collaborating with the CPSC on the recall. Have questions? Contact Oliva by email at [email protected] or online at https://olivacigar.com/lighter-recall or https://olivacigar.com/.

This recall underscores the importance of knowing the safety requirements of products, especially when imported from outside of the U.S. Otherwise, distributors put their clients at risk of being at the center of bad publicity and generating a negative brand image.
