Question: How do I change the numbers of invoices and purchase orders in QuickBooks Online?
Answer: You’ll need to enable custom transaction numbers in your QBO settings:
To enable custom numbers for Invoices (and other sales forms):
- Click the gear icon in the top-right corner and choose “Account” and “Settings.”
- Select the “Sales” tab, then open “Sales form content.”
- Turn on custom transaction numbers, and save.
To enable custom numbers for Purchase Orders:
- Click the Gear icon and go to “Account” and “Settings.”
- Select “Expenses,” then find the purchase orders section and click the pencil icon.
- Turn on custom transaction numbers, and save.
Pro tip: Be deliberate when changing these settings — tweaking transaction-number controls midstream can lead to gaps or duplicates in your numbering.
