Not too long ago, the only time a man could be seen carrying a bag was when his wife or girlfriend was busy in a dressing room. Even then, the man would hold the bag as far from his body as possible, making a show of how uncomfortable he was to be seen holding an object filled with make-up and other emasculating items. Male professionals everywhere carried their work, lunch and personal effects in briefcases, designed to be as non-descript and angular as possible, while students and outdoor enthusiasts utilized boring canvas backpacks and rucksacks to tote their books and camping equipment. An entire industry formed out of the fear men had of being seen in public with anything that could possibly resemble a purse.
Today’s metro male has come to terms with the utility, practicality and fashionability of bags and accessories, and thankfully, manufacturers are now creating styles suitable for both men and women that are equally useful and attractive. The prevalence of laptops, iPods and other hip adornments have created a new family of messengers, carryalls, slings, duffels and clutches that can contain all the necessities of modern life in the urban environment while staying chic. Just don’t dare call them “purses.”
