Apple filed a lawsuit last week against Mobile Star LLC, claiming that it sold knock-off charging cables for Apple devices to Amazon. Apple stated that the fake cables put customers at risk, and requested a permanent injunction against Mobile Star LLC, damages and a trial, according to Motherboard.
“These counterfeits have the potential to overheat, catch fire and deliver a deadly electric shock to consumers while in normal use,” the company said, according to Motherboard. “Consumers, relying on Amazon.com’s reputation, have no reason to suspect the power products they purchased from Amazon.com are anything but genuine.”
After Apple alerted Amazon of the issue, Amazon turned over the supplier’s name (Mobile Star LLC) and gave Apple the inventory in question.
“Amazon has zero tolerance for the sale of counterfeits on our site,” Aaron Toso, a spokesman for Amazon, told Motherboard. “We work closely with manufacturers and brands, and pursue wrongdoers aggressively.”
However, after Apple reached out to Mobile Star LLC, the latter would not give the name of its own supplier and even sold fake cables directly to Apple.
