The U.S. Coast Guard warned mariners in the San Francisco Bay area to navigate with caution after a cargo ship lost 12 large containers in heavy seas last week.
According to the SFGate, the Manoa, an 810-foot cargo ship, was leaving the Port of Oakland and heading to Seattle when it hit 19-foot waves and harsh winds near the Golden Gate Bridge. Twelve containers slid off the side of the ship, one of which broke apart on the rocks, spilling out shipping material into the water and onto the shores of Baker Beach and China Beach in San Francisco.
The Coast Guard and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration worked with city and state officials on Monday to clean up the smaller pieces of debris in the water. Officials warned other boats in the area to be mindful of the other 11 containers, which may have sunk and have not been located yet.
Officials asked members of the community to contact the Coast Guard Sector San Francisco Command Center if they have any information on the missing containers.
