Editor’s Picks: The 411 on Leggings

I love almost everything about the ‘80s. I was born in 1980. I love new wave and synthpop. I’m obligated to love movies like “Adventures in Babysitting,” “Howard the Duck” and “Dirty Dancing.” And, while I still have a genuine love for jellies (in every glitter-infused color), I suppose I also have to defend other staples of ‘80s fashion.

I’ve read that if you wore something when it was trendy before, you probably shouldn’t wear it when the trend inevitably returns. If that’s true, then we have a problem considering so many pieces reenter the fashion scene every several years. Take leggings, for example. I never thought I’d be happy to see women walking around town again modeling every pattern from basic black to cheetah to camouflage. Real talk: It is very easy to violate this trend. Don’t wear a cropped T-shirt with leggings. Instead, try a sweater, a mini dress paired with a leather jacket, a skirt, a T-shirt dress, etc. Don’t build your look around leggings; instead, use them to accentuate your outfit.

To date, I have purchased leggings in black and heather grey. (I’m sure I’ll add to the collection.) So, if I’m wearing leggings, you should too. Because, you know, I’m sure if I “jumped off a bridge,” you would do the same. Either way, below are some styles to keep us looking good on a daily basis.
