With opening day just days away, baseball is in the air. Major League Baseball teams have traditionally given away caps and hats, but some teams have moved away from traditional baseball caps and plan to give away more unconventional headwear this season. According to Sporting News, at least nine MLB clubs have hat-themed promotions scheduled for this season. Here are a few that stood out to us.
While many mark the beginning of baseball season as a true start to spring, the warm weather hasn’t shown up yet in some parts of the country. Luckily, a few teams have planned accordingly with warm-weather headwear. The Minnesota Twins will give out a fur bomber hat to the first 10,000 fans on May 2, and a winter stocking cap on Oct. 2 and 3. The Detroit Tigers join them by handing out fleece-lined Tigers hats on April 17.
Up in the woods of the Pacific Northwest, the Seattle Mariners are giving out a beard hat to the first 20,000 fans to show up on April 17. A week later the Mariners will also give out a bear hat celebrating Hisashi Iwakuma. (His nickname, Kuma, means “the bear” in Japanese.)
The New York Mets will give out a blue and orange fedora to the first 15,000 fans on May 16. Mets executive vice president and chief revenue officer Lou DePaoli told Sporting News that as soon as the test fedoras got to the office, they were an immediate hit with the employees. Who knows, blue and orange fedoras could be the next fashion trend to hit New York.
We’re not sure if the Colorado Rockies’ new promotion qualifies as a hat or a wig or both, but the team will give out a mullet cap on May 24. It will also distribute a trucker hat, digital camouflage cap and fedora as part of its “Purple Monday” promotion this season.
We’re excited about this baseball season. Not because we particularly love baseball or anything, but because we’re looking forward to seeing thousands of people in bear hats and mullet wigs on national television.
