If you’ve been keeping up with the NFL, you probably saw the Minnesota Vikings’ crazy win over the New Orleans Saints. (You probably also saw that the Philadelphia Eagles won!) If you happened to miss the Vikings game, Stefon Diggs made an insane catch to win the game with 58 seconds left. The play made headlines, and yet, the NFL Shop seemed to miss the memo.
According to Vikings Wire, the NFL Shop sent out an email on Monday morning advertising “Conference Championship Bound” gear for the New Orleans Saints. While it was smart to get all email marketing campaigns ready to deploy ahead of the game, it’s a huge mistake to send out championship gear for the team did not win.
NFL Shop has made a terrible, terrible mistake. As if this wasn't the worst Monday already. -dc pic.twitter.com/O2bsdOmUTE

As if Saints fans weren’t already heartbroken, imagine seeing that email appear in their inboxes. Talk about salt on the wound. And for those Vikings fans actually looking for gear to celebrate their team’s victory, this has to feel like a slap in the face.
Who can say how such a mistake can happen within a company as large as the NFL. Either way, it’s an important lesson to learn for your marketing efforts. Perhaps don’t schedule campaigns in advance if there’s a chance it shouldn’t go live. There’s nothing wrong with waiting for a Monday morning.
