If you caught our San Diego Power Meeting recap, then you probably read our short review of the PromoMBA workshop. But the event was so awesome we thought it deserved a more in-depth recap. So, over three parts, we’ll be breaking down some of the sessions in greater detail for those who weren’t able to make it. The good news is, if you missed this year’s PromoMBA, it won’t be the last one! Stay tuned to find out more, and read on for part one of our three-part recap series.

In mid-September, PromoCorner and Promo Marketing teamed up to bring distributors a full, one-day workshop event where Kirby Hasseman, Paul Kiewiet and Bill Petrie led interactive education sessions and discussed topics like “Discovering Your Purpose,” “Finding Your Voice,” “Selling to All Generations,” “The Art of Getting More S#it Done” and more.
Back in August, we had Hasseman and Petrie on the Promo Marketing podcast to chat more about what to expect at PromoMBA. Here’s how one of those sessions actually shook out.

The Art of Getting More Sh#t Done
This, Hasseman’s second presentation, highlighted some of the key things you can start doing in order to be the most productive version of yourself, what to do to get your brain working better and how to stress less. There’s a lot that goes into it, but Hasseman focused on key points like getting more sleep, exercising regularly, focusing on your goals (and sticking to them), meditating to help you think clearly, and more.
Hasseman went into detail about recognizing not only the things that will benefit your productivity, but also the things that could be hindering it. These habits include hitting the snooze button in the morning, multitasking, comparing yourself to others (especially on social media), and “part-timing,” to name a few.
The idea of “part-timing,” as Hasseman described it, meant if something isn’t a “hell yes,” it’s a “no.” Give something your all, especially if you’re passionate about it. Otherwise, it’s not going to be that “hell yes” that it should be. Hasseman admitted that saying “no” isn’t easy, but it’s essential and something you sometimes have to do.
In concluding his presentation, Hasseman left the crowd with some tips they could start implementing right away:
- Have positive influences and people that support you in life.
- Prioritize the most important thing.
- Get tasks done right away. (For example, don’t push off an email.)
- Make every minute/moment count. Everything is an opportunity.
- Track your time and activities.
- Make a habit of scheduling things.
After the event, we chatted with Hasseman and Petrie about PromoMBA and how it all came together.
“I think we always saw a gap in the industry,” said Petrie. “The national education is very high in keynotes and things like that, and there’s just a gap there. The middle class was very under-served. So the people who are trying to get to that next level and instead of just saying, ‘We’re going to help you get to that next level,’ we want to define that and actually have people walk away with tactics and strategies to actually implement that. So, hopefully, when we see these same folks live next year, they’ll say, ‘Thank you so much, you really helped.’”
Hasseman said this was an idea he and Petrie have been thinking about for a long time.
“I think it’s one of those things where we kicked around the idea for years and we talked about that earlier in the day, where it was like, OK, what’s the best way to deliver this kind of training? Is it online?” he said. “And we kind of landed on—there’s more and more online, and so to bring it as an insight experience I think is really cool and adds the networking piece. And, yeah, I think we created a community.”
Hasseman, Petrie and Kiewiet each brought their own ideas about what they wanted to present.
“Knowing what my strengths are, what Kirby’s strengths are and what Paul’s strengths are, it was actually fairly easy,” said Petrie. “I really just wanted to create a day that flowed, and I think that’s what we did. It flowed [between] understanding what your purpose is and finally drilling it down to, OK, how do I beat the things that scare me, like online competitors?”
“Bill and I have been passionate, and Paul certainly for years has been passionate, about elevating the overall industry,” said Hasseman. “We’re a believer in ‘rising water raises all boats,’ so the better and more professional that all of us as an industry are represented, the better for the whole industry. And so, we always say, there’s plenty of business out there, and if we can help people sort of overcome some of the challenges that they’ve had in growing their business, then it ends up being good for all of us.”
