We at Promo Marketing know how important a logo is. We’ve seen what happens when a logo design goes right, and we’ve seen what happens when a logo design goes wrong. Unfortunately, Target learned a valuable lesson in logo design, and hopefully, you can learn from its mistake.
As part of its new apparel brand offerings, Target launched women’s clothing line A New Day. The collection is actually getting a lot of attention for its millennial-approved looks, but the logo is a massive flop.
Once the logo hit the internet, many people struggled to make sense of it. Do you read it top to bottom? Left to right? Diagonal? It seems to take readers several attempts to finally get the logo right, which is obviously a sign of poor design.
Here’s just a few of the hate tweets:

Users pointed out their frustration was, in part, attributed to how easy it would have been for Target to avoid this problem. Couldn’t they have designed it any other way?
So, here’s what we can learn from Target’s gaffe. Make sure your logo is easily legible. It sounds simple enough, but it’s probably the most important component of a logo. If shoppers can’t read it, that’s a bad sign for a brand.
