Fast food is meant to be just that: Fast. We take it on the go, but sometimes we still want something of a dine-in experience wherever we take our food.
McDonald’s just unveiled a new bit of packaging a few months ago called the TableBag, which turns your food back into a standalone cardboard table.
It’s 100% recyclable, and was released as part of Milan Design Week.
So, it’s not clear whether or not we’ll see the TableBag as part of the McDonald’s packaging experience in the future, but it at least shows that designers are thinking about eco-friendly ways to create promotional items, and also new ways to play with packaging design to create a memorable experience.
Fast food packaging is evolving rapidly. Restaurants like Burger King and Starbucks are already testing out reusable packaging and drinkware products, and melting down plastic toys for environmental purposes.
So, while this item looks like a goof from a futuristic movie, it could be something we see down the road for real.
Regardless, it shows that there is a lot you can do with packaging besides four sides and a lid.
