Sometimes fast food promotions are so successful that people want to steal them before they even hit the market. Boxes of unopened Pokemon cards meant for a McDonald’s giveaway mysteriously ended up on eBay, and one time someone even posed as a Whataburger employee to get some branded merchandise only available to staff.
The latest news like this comes from Raising Cane’s, a chain of chicken restaurants, which partnered with rapper Post Malone for a line of collector’s cups. According to XXL, someone apparently stole 249 cups from the Galleria Mall in Houston — a total of $6,150 worth of cups

We’ve seen how successful celebrity tie-ins with fast food can be. In Canada, Justin Bieber’s Tim Hortons meal was an instant success, though we’re not aware of any theft involved.

Raising Cane’s is releasing four different designs over the summer, so we will have to see if any copycat criminals want to complete the whole set, too.

That’s a joke. Please don’t steal cups or any other promotional products.
The resale quality of products like these, however, is not a joke. Exclusivity creates an environment where re-sellers thrive. Surely Raising Cane’s knows this, and that was part of the impetus to partner with Post Malone. This will be sure to drive customers to the restaurant to (legally) get their hands on the cups.
It’s a shame that someone had to spoil the fun for people in Houston who just wanted an extra splash of flair to their lunch, but it’s a good indicator of a successful promotion in the end. That’s a bright side of this, right?
