Growing Through Positive Tension

When we think about the workplace, we tend to associate tension with something negative. But that isn’t always the case. Sometimes tension can be positive.

Whether in our personal lives or in the workplace, the right kind of tension can lead to growth and results. This is because in order to achieve our goals, positive tension requires us to stretch. Instead of trying to avoid positive tension, if we seek to embrace and even seek it out, we will make progress.

Here are five ways we can create positive tension in the workplace that leads to growth and future success:

1. Develop a big vision

When we have a big vision, we create tension because we do not know whether it’s something we can accomplish. However, if we do reach our goal, just think how much satisfaction we will have!

Example: Patagonia

Patagonia’s vision is to be a highly successful outdoor apparel company while also serving as a leader in environmental sustainability. This creates creative tension as the company navigates the complexities of balancing profit with purpose.

2. Write it down

Once you establish a big vision, write it down. This will create tension because now your vision is out there. It is staring at you in print or on screen, but it hasn’t become reality yet.

Example: Howard Schultz

The former CEO of Starbucks famously wrote down a vision for the coffee company that included expanding beyond a small chain to a global brand, while simultaneously creating a place for community and connection. The process of formalizing his ideas clarified the direction for Starbucks and helped the company navigate through challenges, ultimately becoming a leader in the coffeehouse industry.

3. Create “stretch goals”

Instead of setting an easily achievable goal, set one that stretches the abilities of you and your team. Set your goal in your discomfort zone. These are called “stretch goals.” You will know that you have set a stretch goal because of the natural tension that it creates. While this can feel uncomfortable, think about how satisfying it will be when you and your team get there.

Example: Google

Google is known for setting ambitious “moonshot” projects, such as self-driving cars and renewable energy advancements. These stretch goals generate natural tension within teams as they push the boundaries of innovation.

Tension in the Workplace

When we seek positive tension in the workplace, we have the opportunity to achieve greater results for our customers, for our companies, and for ourselves. What ways do you create tension in your workplace and how has it helped you make progress in your business, your profession or your personal life?
