Ask the Accountant…
Question: I have just migrated from QB Premier to QBO, but I have all kinds of sub-customers that I didn’t have before. Why is this happening?
Answer: When you migrate from QuickBooks Desktop into QuickBooks Online and you are using jobs in Desktop, all of the jobs will come into QBO as sub-customers. And worse: All the jobs will be open, even if they’ve actually been closed.
I recently migrated a client into QBO who had 8,000 jobs from over the years. That created 8,000 sub-customers all showing as open. We were not able to close the jobs if they had billable expenses attached to them, so I ultimately had to create an entirely new QBO file that was free and clear of jobs and billable expenses. This was an extreme case, but it’s the perfect example of procedures that are helpful in Desktop that can cause unexpected consequences in the migration to QBO.
QuickBooks is working hard to clear up these types of glitches in the migration process, and I look forward to that. It is certainly an evolving process.
