The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Ace Bayou Corp., New Orleans, is carrying out a voluntary recall of approximately 2.2 million bean bag chairs sold from 1995 to 2013. So far, only 790 customers who bought the chair have responded to the recall. Ace Bayou Corp. re-announced the recall, which it originally announced in 2014, after a slow response from customers.
Children have been able to unzip the opening on the bean bag chairs, allowing children to potentially crawl inside, where they could suffocate on the foam beads.Two children—a 13-year old boy from McKinney, Texas; and a 3-year-old girl from Lexington, Ky.—died from lack of air and inhaling the foam beads inside the chairs. An additional report indicated a 6-year-old boy opened the bean bag and swallowed foam beads.
The chairs, available in a variety of colors and shapes, including L-shaped, have “ACE BAYOU CORP” printed on a tag sewn into the cover seam. The chairs were available at retail stores, such as Amazon, Bergner’s, Big Lots, Bon-Ton, Boston Store, Carson’s, Elder-Beerman, Herberger’s, Meijer, Pamida, School Specialty, Wayfair and Wal-Mart.
Customers should check the bag to make sure it has a metal staple to disable the outer zipper. If it does not, the CPSC urges customers to take the bean bag chair away from children immediately and contact Ace Bayou Corp. for a free repair kit.
