After convincing Walmart to remove apparel related to the Black Lives Matter campaign, the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) is trying to get Amazon to stop selling the same shirts.
FOP president Chuck Canterbury wrote Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos a letter advising him that third-party sellers are selling shirts that say “Bulletproof,” “Black Lives Matter” and “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot.”
In the letter, Canterbury wrote:
You have built a company that demonstrates the reality of the American dream, and your philanthropic work is well known in our country and internationally. Because I believe you share the FOP’s goal of increasing the bonds of trust between the men and women of law enforcement and the communities they serve, I wanted to let you know that my members are very upset that you and Amazon are complicit in the sale of this offensive merchandise. I understand that these are third party sales, but Amazon does have the ability to prohibit the sale of products which are offensive to the public and which may damage your company’s good name amongst FOP members, and other active and retired law enforcement officers.
Canterbury referred to the “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” slogan as an “urban myth,” and offensive to him and FOP members.
