Feeling Overwhelmed? Hit Pause & Simplify

Ever looked at your to-do list and felt like it might just bury you alive?

We’ve all been there. One minute you’re juggling tasks just fine, and the next you’re staring down a mountain of to-dos that seem to multiply by the minute. The problem isn’t your work ethic. It’s the clutter—mental and physical—that creeps in and clouds your focus.

Here’s the good news: Simplicity is always within reach. You just have to know how to reset. Let’s walk through a process I use when things start to get a little too noisy.

1. Stop. Just Stop.

First things first—pause. Shut the laptop. Silence the phone. Take a breath.

When everything feels urgent, nothing is. The mental fog that comes from constant pressure is real. So give yourself permission to step away and regain your footing. This is the reset button.

2. Revisit What Actually Matters

What are you trying to accomplish? Not today. Not this hour, but big picture.

Take a few minutes and reread your core goals. This is what I like to call your “desired outcomes.” Most of the clutter on our lists doesn’t move the needle. Narrow your focus to three to five high-impact goals—that’s it. More than that, and you’re setting yourself up for noise, not progress.

3. Get Ruthless About Priorities

Once your goals are clear, ask yourself: What are the most important things I can do to move these goals forward? Don’t confuse motion with momentum. A long to-do list feels productive, but it rarely is. Identify the tasks that actually support your goals, and let the rest fall away—for now. This is where clarity lives.

4. Picture the Payoff

Close your eyes. Really, try it. Picture what success looks like. That big project completed. That major goal checked off.

Feel that? That’s the calm of alignment of knowing exactly where you’re headed and how you’re going to get there.

5. Refocus with Intention

Now it’s time to get tactical. Grab a sheet of paper (or open a clean document) and write down only the tasks that support your highest priorities. This is your new list. This list won’t be long. It shouldn’t be long, and that’s the point.

6. Get Back at It

You’re ready now. Re-engage with purpose. It only took 15 minutes, but you’ve gone from scattered to strategic. That shift is powerful.

Let’s be honest: Complexity isn’t going anywhere. But being overwhelmed? That’s optional. Know when to stop, reframe and reset. That’s how you protect your time, your energy and your momentum.
