As the New Year approaches, most people will make New Year’s resolutions. Some will take time to plan their resolutions. Others may make their resolutions on New Year’s Eve as midnight approaches.
I’ve tried both approaches. Neither works.
It’s hard, perhaps impossible, to change overnight. Most people have great goals in mind when they make their New Year’s resolutions. Unfortunately, when they fall short of their new goals (usually in January) they abandon those great goals for another year.
Here’s a more sensible approach: New Month resolutions.
Your goals are worth more than just one chance all year, right?
New Month resolutions give you the following advantages:
- Twelve chances for success. Not just one.
- Twelve opportunities to celebrate incremental success toward your goals.
- Twelve times you can re-assess and re-calibrate your goals.
- Twelve “baby steps” are much easier than one nearly impossible leap.
As I wrote in my previous blog article, at Proforma we are calling next year 2X18. That’s our focus on helping our owners double their success in the year ahead. We are already planning several checkpoints every month to help our owners reward their successes and renew their commitments.
Anything really worth doing is worth reviewing your progress and renewing your commitment monthly. As the saying goes, “Inch by inch, life’s a cinch. Yard by yard, life’s hard.”
Happy New Month!
