«MAHATMA GHANDI, INDIAN LEADER, 1869 – 1948

I write this editor’s note on the day of the assassination of two-time Pakistani prime minister, Benazir Bhutto. Readers may ask, “What possible connection could her death have with the sales of promotional products?” Directly—I can easily cite, this being our political-promotions issue—it makes sense. Oftentimes, buttons, badges and ribbons are made to commemorate even horrific events, such as this. I can also mention the ensuing ramifications a world leader’s assassination can have on our industry economically. Already-delicate world markets and staggeringly high oil prices—which now threaten to rise again in the wake of her death—do impact manufacturing and import costs. Yes, the loss of one life can begin such a domino effect. But, as the dominos fall, there are other less-direct points to consider. While sometimes controversial, Bhutto—the first female prime minister in a male-dominated Muslim society—moved through her life without fear. While in public service, she put policies in place that protected the less fortunate, and encouraged economic growth and democracy in a nation plagued by poverty. She found success without compromising her values. While our individual reach may not be as great as someone with such political power, every one of us can make a difference. Promotional product professionals can make an impact, particularly by
going the extra mile to ensure clients receive products that are safe. In addition, distributors can choose to work with suppliers and overseas manufacturers with proven track records of social responsibility. Furthermore, industry professionals can find an ethical standard by which to work and then rely on their inner strength to abide by those rules.

Success without compromise—there is nothing sweeter.
